Louis Vuitton Keepall Size Guide: 45 vs 50 vs 55 vs 60

Louis Vuitton Keepall Size Guide: 45 vs 50 vs 55 vs 60

The Louis Vuitton Keepall has been the brand's signature travel bag since 1930. It is soft, light and folds almost flat when empty – but it comes in four main sizes, and choosing the wrong one is easy. This guide compares the Keepall 45, 50, 55 and 60 so you can find the right size for the way you travel.

Keepall sizes at a glance

The number in the name is the approximate width in centimetres. Measurements below are approximate and can vary slightly between production years.

  • Keepall 45 – approx. 45 × 27 × 20 cm. The smallest classic size.
  • Keepall 50 – approx. 50 × 29 × 22 cm. The most versatile size.
  • Keepall 55 – approx. 55 × 31 × 24 cm. The classic weekend bag.
  • Keepall 60 – approx. 60 × 34 × 26 cm. The largest, for longer trips.

Keepall 45 – the overnight bag

The Keepall 45 is ideal for one or two nights away, the gym or as a stylish everyday holdall. It is also the easiest size to use as cabin luggage. If you want the Keepall look without carrying a large bag, start here.

Keepall 50 – the all-rounder

The Keepall 50 adds noticeable space without looking oversized. It fits a weekend's worth of clothes, a pair of shoes and a toiletry bag. For many people, this is the size that gets used the most.

Keepall 55 – the classic weekender

The Keepall 55 is the size most people picture when they think of the bag. It works for a long weekend or a short trip and fits comfortably in the boot of a car or an overhead bin on many flights – but always check your airline's cabin size limits before you fly.

Keepall 60 – the big one

The Keepall 60 is for longer trips or for people who simply pack a lot. When full it is a substantial bag, so it is best suited to car travel or as checked luggage.

Can I take a Keepall as carry-on?

Because the Keepall is soft, it can often be squeezed into cabin size limits that a hard suitcase would not meet. The 45 and 50 are the safest choices for carry-on. The 55 can work on some airlines if it is not packed to the limit. Airline rules differ, so always check before you travel.

Keepall vs Keepall Bandoulière

The Bandoulière version has metal D-rings on the sides and comes with a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap. The regular Keepall only has the two rolled top handles.

  • Choose the Bandoulière if you will carry the bag long distances, through airports or stations, or want your hands free.
  • Choose the regular Keepall if you mainly travel by car or want the cleanest, most classic look.

Note that a regular Keepall cannot be converted to a Bandoulière, since it has no D-rings for the strap.

What to check on a vintage Keepall

  • Handles – the vachetta leather on the handles darkens with use. An even honey patina is normal and attractive; deep cracks are worth noting.
  • Bottom corners – the base takes the most wear on a travel bag. Look for rubbing or holes in the canvas corners.
  • Zipper – a Keepall's long zipper gets heavy use and should run smoothly from end to end.
  • Interior – the textile lining should be clean and intact, without tears or strong odours.
  • Date code – most Keepalls from the 1980s onward carry one. Learn how to read it in our date code guide.
